1593-1615
A young lord who fell into the astute hands of Ieyasu
Second son of Torotomi Hideyoshi by a principal wife, Lady Yodo.
When their first son, Tsurumatsu, died in infancy, he became Hideyoshi's
official heir. Just before his death, Hideyoshi organised a council of chief
warriors to protect the child Hideyori until he came of age, and this group
included Ieyasu and Ishida Mitsunari. But it was not to be, and at the
Battle of Sekigahara, overall power was established for themselves by the
Tokugawa. Hideyori became just one among many daimyo, although with a large
holding of 600,000 koku.
Hideyori married Lady Sen (Sen-hime), daughter of
Ieyasu's son, Hidetada, but on the pretexts of the famous Hoko-ji Bell
Incident (when Ieyasu took offence at an inscription placed on the bell
gracing Hideyoshi's mortuary temple), the Tokugawa attacked Osaka Castle in
the so-called Winter Campaign. Peace was soon reestablished, but as one a
condition of the truce, the outer moat of Osaka Caslte was filled in. The
Tokugawa bided their time, but the following year, 1615, attacked the
now-insufficiently defended castle again, and took it with ease. Hideyori
and Lady Yodo committed suicide, thus terminating the Toyotomi house.
Hideyori was 23 years old.
